Poem Commentary

We are told so many things as children - are they true? Are any of them true? Or are they always just beyond us?

A Child Contemplates

I was told that the Universe is revealed
In just one blade of grass
So I sit alone in Daddy's field
With my magnifying glass

A tiny bug runs up the stem
I wonder what that means
The sun shines on this lovely gem
Is this more than what it seems?

All things reach for the sun
This grass blade does it too
And up the blade the bug does run
Is that all that it can do?

I'm afraid I cannot fathom this
It seems so far beyond me
That in this small blade of grass
I should see eternity

I understand that in this blade
There's a tiny factory
And while the grass in not in shade
It's really a refectory

But how does this relate to me
What does it really mean?
It seems that I am all at sea
I look, but it's not seen.

We are fortunate, are we not, that children do not contemplate for when they do they are no longer children. Drew.

A fine observation, Drew.

This is just lovely. You are a master poet. I see that child as plain as day with his glass...I'll bet his name was STRYX. Hugs Bill...still love me?

Nyah - Could be. Still love you? Always. Had a response but my computer had a nervous brake down and I couldn't sent. Probably best...

I guess that is because I never grew up. I'm only 82, you know.

I appreciate your read, M. And of course R's recomendation

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
