    A Long Walk

    A Long Walk

    The sidewalk I walked upon

    So many times before

    With scattered leaves and memories

Squirrels crossing in front of me

    with peanuts in their teeth

    The Sun intermittently shining

    between all the trees

    The pond looking pretty

Fountain flowing, benches by it’s side

    The smell, not so alluring

    The sidewalk

    It is never ending

    on this particular day

    As I pass the dwelling

    where the boy had played

for hours on end on the computer

I would hear him through the night

    In the morning

    Tapping me on the shoulder..

    At nighttime

    laying across my bed

    talking about the days events

    with more small chatter

of the days that lie ahead

    Off to the kitchen

To stand at the refrigerator door

    Like so many times before

    I pass the place

    where he used to work

I imagine the bike he rode,

    the car he drove

in the parking lot, …no more

I walk the street he drove upon

    and waved out the window

    as he drove by

    This long sidewalk

    and it’s memories

    repeat daily in my mind

    The time it took

    to walk this walk

    so many times before

I thought it would never end…

    I finally approach my door

    My shelter

    From a long walk

    with too many memories

    that came unfurled

    with each step I took

At a time not so long ago

When it was you and I against

    the world.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
