    Poem Commentary

It was the first of the Month and a new Currier and Ives picture was on the calendar. It was called , 'The Clipper Ship." I grabbed a piece of paper and started writing. Ten minutes later I was finished. I have changed few words since that day. It was written in dialect - it just came that way - and spelling, while holding the meaning of the words was the most challenging. I hope you like it.

    ABAFT

Did ya ev'r stand on the bow of a ship
with the sea spray in y'r hair?
Did ya ev'r stand a midnight watch
       an' the weather's never fair?

Did ya ev'r feel the deck beneath
       begin ta toss an' roll?
Did ya ev'r see a man fall o'r
an' curse yer own dark soul?

Did ya ev'r climb ta the highest mast
       an' stare fer land ahead?
Did ya ev'r when ya'd spied the land
       turned ta the sea instead?

Hav ya ev'r laid ya down at night
an' heard 'er creak an' groan?
Hav ya ev'r stood in the mornin' light
       an' know'd ya'd found a home?

Aye, this I'v done, an' a whole lot more,
an there's much that I did see.
I know the ways of a fickle ship,
that's why we call 'er , 'She.'

I'v cursed 'er when she's acted up,
I'v cursed 'er when all's well.
Ya'v got to show who's Master,
or ya'll both go down ta hell.

An' one day when the time is ripe,
      when Davy'd call 'er low,
    Ya'd never hesitate ta stay,
      ya'd rather go below

Hav ya ev'r been f'r weeks at sea
an' be the first ta go ashore?
    Hav ya ev'r drunk y'r fill o'rum
an slept with some ol' whore?

Did ya ev'r ressel a bear to the floor
Did ya ev'r brake down a maiden's door?
Did ya ev'r get lost for months at sea?
Did ya ev'r hold down a mutiny?

Were ya ev'r on board when the sea was so rough that ya' lashed y'r self ta the mast?
Hav ya ev'r seen your ship brake up
    an' pieces go flotin past?

Hav ya ev'r felt the water arisin' up your hide?
Hav ya ev'r felt the ship y'ron aturnin on e'r side?
Hav ya ev'r lived a Sea Dogs life?
Hav ya' ev'r fought a man with a knife?

Hav ya ev'r had a ship fer a wife
If ya never hav, I pity ya - aye,
       ya'v not lernt ta live
an' ya'll nev'r know how ta die!

I enjoyed the dialect. The loser within even showed his face. I attempted to read the poem outloud. Only to be found out by my roommate. Quite a show I tell ya. Haha. Thanks Cap'n Favorited for sure.

I find reading aloud is the only way to evaluate poetry. Thanks H.

Sea Dog dialect aside, this poem moves along on the provocative nature of the questions, and we all know that whoever asks the questions, sets the agenda. Whatever his rank a-sea might have been, he's Cap'n of the wharf! I can see him lookin' up over his fid and bite, chewin' the nib off an unlit pipe, poking the air for effect at a pregnant juncture. Let the good times roll!

Ah, the seeping romance of the Sea! Just now, I wish there were one especially fabulous adjective I had reserved, saved, and conserved... For just this piece! It is uniquely moving! From the colloquial dialect to the engaging spirit of defiance! I loved it all! Perfection my friend! "10"

IThis is really awesome. Makes me want to be a pirate.

Poetry is what gets lost in translation.
