    Poem Commentary

I'm writing about the wettest place on earth. I lived there during most of my youth. I returned to the place years after I left it and felt depressed. But now that I'm away, I miss the place.

    Abode of the Clouds

I rue my estranged home unchanged ten years on.

But in my moments I miss the rustic west of the Abode of the clouds.

Like a ghost I'd roamed every foot of that wild west,

And it comes back to haunt my moments of loneliness.

The day I set my foot there was the dark part,

People clad in heavy clothing complete with shawls,

Loaded with the day's purchases and petrol torches,

Took me back to scenes from some Eastwood movies.

Their rugged look and bettle red mouths stirred my fears,

But I learned to revere them even more gradually.

I often stared at the white sky with blue patterns,

That seemed to be placed to perfection by an artist.

There was a hazy halo around the sky.

It was nature at its best granting a glimpse of the divine.

Evening sky was an art gallery of unequalled artists.

Winter was the only unforgiving aspect of this land,

The cold could freeze your emotions,

The relentless fog wipes clean the impressions in the sky.

But then one always enjoyed freshly rolled tobacco,

And the stroll to some wooden house for a drink or two,

When you crossed path with some wasted drunks.

One of those nights still linger in my mind,

Memory smeared with taste of tobacco and Dan Seals.

West somehow brings a charm of its own.

That's the charm beckoning me to return to the Abode of the clouds.

A beautiful piece of writing fraught with fresh imagery! Lovely descriptions sharing your views! I love the line "The relentless fog wipes clean the impressions in the sky" Very nicely done!

Thanks, Sam for the interest. It's poem close to my heart 'cause it's about a place that means a lot to me.

Tell me, Abraham, is The Abode of The Clouds the name of your birthplavce, where you grew? I too feel depressed after a visit to my home village, Fruitful Vale in Jamaica,. A once luscious river that ran the length of the vilage is almost dry, with stones esposed like so many skeletons of the past,. The single road is in a bad condition. There is uncut bush evreywhere, and many houses are decrepit, although there are a few new ones. People I used to know are either dead or have migrated. There is sign of poverty everywhere. Your poem is a superb narrative- descriptive creation. You paint poetically with great feeling and attention to detail. Your versifcation is perfect. My rating is 10x10.

'The Abode of the Clouds' is the name of a village, but not my birth place. It's where I spent the best years of my life. It's my second home. Yeah, it's very depressing when you're so obsessed with it while you're away from there. And all your longings come crashing down when you revisit it. Thanks for the read and apprciation, cousinsoren.

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
