“Father’s Lullaby”

Poem Commentary

This poem was written roughly fourteen minutes after my daughters birth.  All the warm passion felt in my hands and the beauty I could see in her sweet little eyes set my mind in motion.  At one flash at a time, I could see the responsibilities this young new father had to treasure and protect this grandest prize he had ever been granted...  But all along, I knew, there would come a day when another man would take her away...  Oh sweet child of mine.

“Father’s Lullaby”

The first time that I knew

I’d be missing you

Was the first day I looked into your eyes?

For I knew there would come a day

He would take you away

…Leaving me silently to cry.

I know it seemed as though

I smothered you so

For everyday I held you tight

Wanting to make it all seem so right

Oh how I longed for a little

…”Daddy, I love you’”.

Trying to remove any doubts;

I’d catch you when you’d fall,

Countless advice,

You thought would never end.

Right or wrong

I only wanted to be your best friend

…Protecting you.

But now I know

Though it hurts me so

True love is in letting go

So tonight I’ll pray

Each and everyday

You’ll keep learning without me

…”I Love You!”

It’s a fathers Lullaby

There’s a tear in his eye

No story left untold

No little hand to hold

…the sorrow starts to flow.

Yes his job appears to-be-done

Though they’ll say he did it well

On that day his tears will swell

From the new emptiness inside

But her smile will make it feel so right

For each day he will hold their memories oh so tight

He just wants her to know

…”He Truly Loves Her So!”

very good as a father this poem brought tears to my eyes, as I had to let my daughter go, to live her life away from me. It hits home , thank you ...I'm going to call her now just to tell her I love her so.

Wonderful piece, wish all fathers were that way about their children, its wonderful when it happens and every parents greatest joy is to see their children move into life from infancy upwards. Fathers and Mothers are always needed for backup even in adulthood just not every second or every day but there when you need them.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
