Afro American Butterfly

Afro American Butterfly

Spread your wings, prepare to fly

Afro American Butterfly

Let the winds of adversity cause you to rise

To your place in destiny’s skies

Use your trials and tribulations

For the wind beneath your wings

Soar on to your expectations

On your flight to bigger and better things

Let setbacks and disappointments

Be the ground beneath your feet

Your dreams your healing ointments

As you rise above life’s heat

Place no limits on expectations

In your beliefs be bold

Use as a springboard your frustrations

to help you reach your goals

For all that you can imagine

Lies within destiny’s stream

In ways you can never fathom

Soar high to achieve your dream

For God has given to you

His kingdom and all it’s treasure

As is his will to do

His delight and his pleasure

The halls of greatness awaits you

Just beyond life’s next door

Focus on what you must do

To receive all that God Has in store

Within you burns a creative fire

Placed there by the God of love

The catalyst to achieve your desire

All things to rise above

So spread your wings prepare to fly

Wing on to your destiny

Your dominion is the earth and sky

Be all you dare to be H.Wilson

If i was a teacher this poem would be included among the curriculum. I have worked with so many inner city youth whose main advantage were the brains they were never encouraged to use very much. I use to read one of Maya Angelous's poems to them that had a line that read "I am the hope and the dream of the slave." I would ask them if they were honoring all those slaves that worked to bring them thus far. Sometimes that guilt trip wpuld work. This is inspirational. All of our children need hope love and lots of inspiration. you did it here. great piece.

Thanks for reading and commenting. This poem came to me one day years ago when all the drive bys and gang violence was going on in the late 90'. I appreciate your comments

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.

T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
