After you are Gone

    Poem Commentary

    Sometimes the old sayings are the best we don't know what we've got until it's gone.  This poem is dedicated to the love of my life lost for reasons that cannot be redeemed, in hopes that she finds happiness in her future.

    After you are Gone

    When all hope was lost you came and made me smile,

    walking with me steady through every mile.
    Your devotion proven by selfless actions,

    holding my hand through my pasts painful contractions.

    Never questioning you would be there forever,

    whether in the dark of night or light of day.

    My obsession with fixing the past severed,

    now I am free, as a child at play.

    I knew somehow from the very start,

    you were the gardener to my heart.

    In a times of darkness and despair you shine,

    like shards of glass rubbed smooth by ocean brine;

    polishing the rubble of my soul, I am refined.

    You showed me always that I was worthy,

    silently portraying your acceptance.

    You always treated me honorably,

    even in my folly you found credence.

    When needed I’d cry on your shoulder,

    dearest friend, my strength you’d bolster.

    Unfailing you gave comfort,

    from the storm of life you were my port.

    Every game we have played,

    no moment ever frayed;

    no longer seeing my future so grave?

    My finale desperate secret is yours,

    offered upon the altar of trust;

    I break through my hearts alkalied crust.

    Surrendering to my self imposed doom,

    I stand lonely on this dune.

    My worthless world no longer blue,

    because I once was loved by you.

    Thank you for reading, I'm glad this poem can touch another as much as the inspiration for it touched me. Congratulations on the win BTW.

    Interesting poem. Your font is painfully small-so hard to see. Next time use a larger font.

    Thank you for your input, tired a 14pt font but that seemed too big, I'll not second guess myself next time... hmm no second guessing; now there's a lesson that I really should learn to take to heart.

    If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

    Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
