    An Ode to the Family

why do i seek the approval of the one who doesn't care?
isolated from the bonds that are supposed to keep you close
you alienated yourself from us not us from you
an empty shell is what you've become
a ghost of what should be a happy family
a stranger residing in my home; if one could call it that
shattered to pieces with nothing left to pick up
not worth putting the pieces back
how is it that you gave me life, but don't know me at all?
so convinced i'll end up like them
why can't you open your eyes and see my potential?
i don't know why i still try, i should have stopped a long time ago
i thought "daddy's little girl" was supposed to mean something
just once look me in the eyes and tell me you're proud
but, of course, that day will never come
although i know this my denial continues
why can't i just stop caring? you've set such an excellent example.
i guess you can never escape your family....

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
