    Attention Whore

    I was minding my own

    When you noticed me

You undress me with your eyes

    On the very spot

    You warm me up

Steel my attention with a smile, with a word

You love to lead me on

You love to work me up

You love to leave me hanging

Never falling through with what you start

    Or suggest

Yet you do not want to be branded

    With the title

    That depicts your actions

    For you can be found

    Around the corner

    With a different man

    Every few songs

    Throughout the night

    Through all the music

You hold true to your only companion

Helpless and easily controlled within your hands

    A drink, your only consistency

You try to appear like you have some sort of

    Self respect

But you’re not fooling any of the regulars

    They know your type

    So do I

So now I bid you farewell

For I am giving my attention

    To those with more maturity

My dances to those of integrity

My friendship to those that are honest

    Those lacking in the games

You so dearly love to play

    Have fun

With those that will use you

    As you use them

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
