Because of War, My Dear

Poem Commentary

War, proud we should be of those who have fought wot keep this country free, and humbled by those who gave their life for the same reason. I just recently buried a family member who was killed is this crazy war we are in. His little child asked pretty much these very questions. This poem is in his and his daughters memory.

Because of War, My Dear

Why has my Father changed?
Why can't he see or hear me?
Why doesn't he remember me?
Because of war, my dear.

Why does he look so funny?
Why does he look so strange?
Tell me, please, tell me.
Because of war, my dear.

Why isn't there an eye?
And why hasn't he an ear?
Why, why, why?
Because of war, my dear.

Why does Father lie so silent;
Shedding nary a tear?
Why is he so still?
Because of war, my dear.

Why is he in a black box?
Why are these people here?
Why don't they welcome Father back?
Because of war, my dear.

As sad an indictment against war as ever I read. My heart breaks when I encounter a surviving child (especially one too young to fully comprehend how stupid grown-ups can be), whose lost innocence becomes the cost for fighting abroad.

Yes, it was hard to see the little ones who did not understand and most of the adults that didn't take the time or concern for them to help them undersand. I took them aside and talked with them and let them ask me their questions. Hence, that is where this poem came from. Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts with me. Blessed Be.

eloquent and to the point ... and timely, unfortunately, in any time ... but that makes it a classic ... this could be a conversation in Greece, 200 B.C. ... there is no peace through war ... glad to make a connection! nice piece! -dh

Sad write and a solemn reminder of the many fathers who came back from war injured and maimed, mentally vanquished and to many returning to be buried 10 from me.

Thank you so much for your kind words and you humble me with your vote. Yes, sad and solemn but a write that I couldn't help but do with it happening so close in my family. Thank you again. Blessed Be

You gave me goosebumps! Good one! Just the though of losing someone dear is bad and you made me feel that I was one of the people on the background while this is all happening.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
