Black and White

Black and White

Black and white have turned to gray,
This could be worse so it's okay,
It's not wrong, but it isn't right,
I come back to this every night,

Whatever happened to wrong and right?
Whatever happened to black and white?

There's still good and there's still bad,
There's still goodness to be had,
There's still right and there's still wrong,
And there still has been all along.

We tell ourselves to just say no,
It turns out it's all for show,
We give into gray once again,
And we are caught in our sin,

Whatever happened to wrong and right?
Whatever happened to black and white?

There's still good and there's still bad,
There's still goodness to be had,
There's still right and there's still wrong,
And there still has been all along.

Just because we say it's gray,
Doesn't make it go away,
Just because we say it's gray,
Doesn't mean that it's okay,

It's not okay, it's not alright,
This act will make you gray inside,
So stand up and do what's right,
The shades of gray are black and white,

Whatever happened to wrong and right?
Whatever happened to black and white?

There's still good and there's still bad,
There's still goodness to be had,
There's still right and there's still wrong,
And there still has been all along.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
