    Poem Commentary

    This one, also written in '94, came form the enduring love I have for my Native American heritage. I come from Cherokee blood far back in my lineage and I have always felt a pull from that part of my soul that longs to be able to live and see things the way my ancestors did. I hope no one is offended by anything written here, it comes from my heart and no ill will is intended. I just feel like the Native American people have been looked at so negatively that I had to say what I felt.

    Brave Words

     Our blood is red, our hearts are pure.
    Our time has come and gone too soon.
    But hidden deep in every tribe,
    is a lust and yearning to once again thrive.
    To take back a land once our own,
    that time and the white eye has overthrown.
    They call themselves the superior race,
    but greed and avarice rule in heart's place.

    A love for nature, mind, and soul
    gave all our nations courage and self-control.
    Yet money and bloodlust corrupted some brethren
    to turn their backs and seek new civilization.
    It mattered not that their ways were untrue,
    only one thing concerned them, to be like wy sche chu.
    The latter generations realized this mistake,
    and picked up the arrows tossed away in the wake.

    Will there ever be another time?
    A day the white eye admit to their crime?
    Or shall we fight the endless scorn
    our people suffer like enduring thorns?
    Our treachery is miscalled, our savagery false,
    but our love for our people; that was our cause.
    Will time heal all wounds, or will Thunderbird fly?
    Will the bald eagle's feather forever smite the falcon's eye?

    it's difficult being any kind of Native American in a white man's world, but we have to trudge on and be proud, and never let our heritage die...Raz

    Excellent write Raz, I wish I could go back in time and fix the wrongs. Alas, I dream. It's just so freakin sad that our people were treated like vermin. I'm proud of my Indian/Irish blood. I'm also ashamed to be called white some days.

    I feel your pain, dear, i hate being called white when i look at the things our people have suffered. And i have irish in me as well, so that is another side that i feel prideful of. one day maybe we will see a new glory...Raz

    What a strong piece!! I think this story needed to be told. As a white American male, I take no offense to this. Every race has had to suffer. I'm Irish, and I know how bad it was for Irishman in this country. We all have a story to tell, that's what makes this world so wonderful. Grea write my friend - 10 from me..

    once again i am flattered by your words, dear friend. i hope others read it and find the same sense of meaning as you, but not all people are as easy to accept truth over historical fiction. i myself have an Irish heritage, so I also understand that plight as well. thanks again.

    Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
