Caged (The Prince)

  • Well, here goes nothing. Really. I'm not doing anything.

Caged (The Prince)

There's so much I have to do as prince.
But there's not much I get to do as prince.
I stopped playing "childish games" like hopscotch at 3.
I stopped playing everything else at 4.
Because at 4, I started fencing.
I starting horseback riding.
I started tactical training.
I started rifling.
I started being prince.
Now, forty years later, the king is near death.
So I'm starting advanced fencing.
I'm starting advanced horseback riding.
I'm starting advanced tactical training.
I'm starting advanced rifling.
I'm starting to be king.
I have no choice, none at all.
I feel so caged.
I wish I could escape the castle in the dead of night, and ride away.
I wish I could spend my nights under the stars with a band of gypsies.
I wish I could spend my days working for my living like a real man.
I wish I could rise with the sun and sleep with the moon.
I wish I could unlock my cage.
My cage holds me in like a mouse in an owl's gripping talons.
My cage holds me in like a man under the weight of a fallen tree.
My cage holds me in like the gold in a dragon's deathly lair.
My cage holds me in like a stream between the river banks.
And I don't have the key.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
