    Poem Commentary

    Written years ago. Nothing impressive.

    Chain

Sadness has come to haunt once again, and again I ask old questions.
Where are my friends to lift this self pity, to hinder doubts ambitions.

They'll say life is just fine! Always ups for downs!
Like chains on a smile? or wings on a frown?

But oh! these long day are unpaid yet still taken,
And oh! so high is the ground.

Still though, I'll bind my cross to a chain
As I am bound to a day.

Perhaps one day this chain will break,
And my cross shall fly free and away.

Stand on your head and you will see the chains will make smiling easy, and the wings on your smile keep beating like hell. And you will be grounded and doing quite well.

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.

    T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) American-English poet and playwright.
