Poem Commentary

This poem is written in remembrance of Chard L. Walker, friend, neighbor, author, writer, historian, photographer. I dedicate this poem
to all his family and friends.

In loving memory! Chard L. Walker ( 1933-2007)

Chard's Summit

If all men could rightly be,
as genuine a man as he,
then this world where one would be,
a perfect place we would see.
Railroad author, and historian too,
Chard loved riding the rails
his whole life through.
He loved to talk and write about trains
put on slide shows to entertain.
Friends would come from near and far,
to look at his photos of trains and cars.
A great photographer and writer too,
we read his books on the Cajon Pass
just to name a few.
With a great sense of humor and a very kind heart
the knowledge bestowed made him incredibly smart,
we all loved to hear the stories with cheer and a smile,
he would talk about life at the Summit for quite a while.
We learned all about his club-car named the Descanso,
as well street cars and trains, in the likes of the Santa Fe Railroad
the Summit will never be the same.
Chard loved riding the trains every chance one got
and spoke at conventions quite a lot.
Chard L. Walker made lot's of friends throughout his life,
his closest was Margaret his dear loving wife.
Family came first, as it was well meant to be,
which included visits to Montana just to see,
his children and grandchildren he held so dear,
he would travel to see them each and every year.
With a love for pipe organ music most of his life,
he traveled and made friends along with his wife.
They would share their passions with those that cared,
type them all out so neatly prepared.
Christmas letters carefully written
spoke of family and friends and those special additions,
the birth of a great grandchild, always good news,
along with a rail trip with a friend or two.
Then a subtle mention of an annual train convention
and the letter was near completion.
Chard, from the Summit was without a doubt
a storyteller for all leaving nothing out.

We miss him a lot...

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.
