Child of Longing

Child of Longing

Creeping up behind me
She tugs at my shirttail
Sadness brimming her eyes
I long to wrap her in a hug

Holding her close
I smooth out the tangles
Wipe the spilling tears
Give her a smile of love

My loneliness lingers
Nearby, never far from the surface
Her need reaches out
Holding on, holding back

The child I was, still hovers
She keeps me grounded
And real...
When I want to believe

She is there,
Sad eyes full of mystery
Spilling longing like bread crumbs
On the journey

Just imagine if we could all provide some comfort to that special child of our own...that hug...or smile of reassurance...just imagine what peace could be had... Very introspective and thoughtfully composed work! Nice!;)

Thank you so much, Sam, for your insightful comment. I agree, the peace to be found within ourselves if we tend our inner child is surely a source to take into consideration.

Intense sadness and beauty abounds in this beautifully expressed prose. I felt the words. We all have an inner child residing in us, whether or not we choose to believe it. You captured the essence of that completely in this poem. Very Well Done!
