    The lanky black lady
    bent sideways
    plastic bag full
    of newspaper clippings
    and a fortune of coupons
In her hands a smudged piece
    of news about jobs
    housekeeping classified ads
and I too am looking for a gig

    in my supposedly elevated field
    Newsprint smudges my hands too
I with my own neatly folded ads
    nowfind myself sharing a quest
    through scraps of paper
with a woman from the lower rungs

We two have folded up our hopes
    in little squares

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
