COME

Poem Commentary

I found the first stanza of this that I had scrawled on an envelope and finally got to finish it. It reflects back to a very dark time that I think I am finally coming out of.

COME

Come dredge the sewer that was once my heart, if you care.

Come trudge the streets that were once my home, if you dare.

Come look up at the sky through my tears.

Come walk the dark streets of my fears.

Come along as I struggle through the day.

Come listen in the night while I pray.

Come in and look out through my eyes.

Come find the part of me that has died.

Come stop the destruction of my soul.

Come fix this gigantic, gaping hole.

Come see all the hell you left behind.

Come see all it's glory here defined.

Come trudge the streets that were once my home, if you care.

Come dredge the sewer that was once my heart, if you dare!

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
