Poem Commentary

This is a true story of an old cowboy, I knew back many years ago.
This is just one og many stories i have to tell about his life.
 Hope you enjoy.... Mary

Cotton - Eyed - Joe

Back many years ago
there lived a man

Named Cotton Eyed Joe- - -

A horse trader was he
good sound steed guaranteed

So I was told- - -

Decided to pay this man a visit
Tall lean man was he

More than crooked teeth
I did see

To my surprise
he had but one eye

The other stuffed with cotton- - -

I tried not to stare
Oh Lord, do I dare

Ask old Joe to share - - -

Seeing concern in my eyes
He kindly obliged

Hey little gal
don't you be scared

You see I met my match one day - - -

This onery old mare
didn't really care

If she lived or died - - -

She bucked and reared
Kicked me right here

Putting out old Joe's eye.....

{ This is a true story about the day I went to buy my first horse. I have more stories to about old Joe, i will share later.} to be continued... ... ...

In a time of modern gadgetry it's nice to read of something past that takes me back to the country. Looking forward to your continuation.

An interesting story-line for a poem, a bit cliche . But the archaic use of line-reversals between subject and verb in the verses creates glitches. They impede the natural flow of modern English. Flow is rhythm. and rhythm is the the language itself. So to put a reversals into any verses for whatever reason weakens the poem. Especially if it is to make a rhyme. It makes rhymes look forced within the flow of the poem. Reversals are contrary to the contextual flow of the poem and its language. a poet friend// RH Peat

A very interesting story. It seems like old Joe was a very gentle man. I had a friend who knew a lot about horses too.His name was Joe Hannes, but he died of a heart attack about 13 years ago.

What a beautiful man was old Joe and so gentle and intuitive knowing you were perhaps not comfortable. So old Joe explained and set you at ease. What a story and since you say you have more perhaps a novel would be a great tribute to his memory. Looking forward to listening to the next chapter.

You are sweet, yes indeed, I will do that, I'm working on another story, i'll surprise you, Mary

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.
