CRY SOFTLY
I learned to cry softly
So no one could hear
The shaking inside
With intense fear.
I learned to hide
And be extremely quiet
I tried to be calm
The fear came on me despite it.
I learned to crawl
Into dark corners under the house
Trying to stop shaking
So they wouldn’t find me, no doubt.
I learned to disappear
Under the covers on my bed
Knowing at any time
I could wind up dead.
So I still cry softly
To hide the pain.
Thank God I have a heart
I don’t have to rely on the thoughts
Going through my brain
And keep trying to mask the pain.
