    Poem Commentary

This poem is about my dad. Who passed away a month ago, if you have read my other poem about him you would know that our relationship has had its ups and downs and unfortunately he has lost the battle. I miss him dearly and this is the first poem I have been able to write since his passing. I hope you all enjoy.

    darkness.

If I crawl out of this darkness
I am told I will find the light.
    Though it seems impossible,
I find there is still life moving on outside.
Although I wish it would have, it has not halted for me.
    Images appear all around me,
Smiles and laughter are all that I see.
    Where did my happiness go
Why did he have to leave?
He swore everything was going to get better
    Eventually.
In time he said his promises would show the truth
    Time wasn't on his side,
Maybe he had nothing left to prove.
    As his image fades away,
Just like the light in my life
His voice remains a beacon of hope
To get me through the painful nights.
I will never be the same
    That I know for sure
    His name will always remain
    Tattooed to my heart
Until the day we meet again
    I will be sitting here,
    Alone in the dark.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
