Decision

Awakened the demons were meant to be
the blackness was always there
I should have known to make you see
beyond the darkness lies despair.

What now, where shall we go?
It's feeding on the heart
I should have known to make you know
It breaks all sense apart.

Busy is the mind
trying to find the soul
the heart is undefined
trying hard to make it whole

I gave fair warning
I left the clues
"Turn back now!"
were the words I used.

They were always there
lingering on your lips
the words that you now bare
they somehow overcome your mind
How they have you in their grip

There always is a way
to wrest the demons' hands
though fear will never be the same
Nothing you can't stand

Put away the darkness
Put away the tears
put away the sharpness
built up through all the years

I'm not lingering on the memories
all the foul sick nightmares
Nor the ugly headed demons
that demand all of their fair shares

Truly the night brings darkness
with beauty wrapped inside
A heart known to feel
beats hard and tries to hide

Lines carved in your heart
start to appear upon your face
the blood grows thick and tart
you've found my hiding place

I know just what it is
I know just who you are
the reflection in the mirror
you reflect all of the scars
the water is getting deeper now
I know who you really are.

The demons they become natural
they follow like a shadow
they share a part afterall
yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Yes a decision has been made
full of hatred and sorrow
not to turn back now
not ever becoming shallow.

Deeper goes the heart
deeper goes the mind
deeper goes the soul
what is it they try to find?

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
