    Poem Commentary

I grew up in the Mississippi Delta, and to me, Muddy Waters embodies the personification of the Blues. The songs of the slaves could not be silenced, because they sang from their souls and not just their hearts. This has been passed down from generation to generation. There are not many Blues singers today, but where I came from, they can still be found... and heard.

    Delta Blues

    Melodiously stricken chord
    Ushers sweet refrain
    Delta soil laborers
    Driven by unbroken soul
    Yearn their hearts to speak

    Whipped beyond mercy
    Anchored to a plow
    Tendered to labor
    Ere slips a saddened song
    Repressed by society
    Still it is heard!!

This one is its own comment. You're imagination is prolific, bro, and you're letting it off the leash. Check out the flick, "Cadillac Records". You'll get a real kick out of that.

I have to admit I don't know much about the blues beyond the few songs I have ever sung myself but, this is beautifully written and makes me want to learn more about the blues. This strikes a chord with me because I was a music ed major and sang opera for about ten years and I sing everything under the sun. Music is a passion of mine. Thanks for the wonderful read. Vanessa

This is a neat little poem; despite the potentially artificial device of using initial letters to organize it, you've achieved a small miracle of expressive rhythm and imagery.

Acronym of heritage in the words. I can see in minds eye the slaves working the fields with their songs to ease the load. Made me think of the the song Catfish John for some reason, aloft.

Thank you very much, GentleT, for your comments, and for seeing the images that I wished to portray through this poem.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
