Dementia Defined

As the phobia advanced
I painted an austere canvass of death
And a wintry gust of frozen mist
Sealed the trepidation upon my face

Frantically I fought to find some delightful diversion
Another puzzle to piece together
Another song that needed verse
Or another poem that needed lines

Without avail I searched for more creative distractions
A book that needed read
A story that needed creation
A friend who needed a voice

But madness consumed me
Thoughts were perplexed inside my clouded mind
My hands uncontrollably shook
And crimson puddles splashed the page

I begged my pen produce one last verse of poetic veracity
A stanza with rhyme
A stanza with meter
A stanza with power

But I was distracted by haunting reverberations
The soundless screams that exited my mouth
As prowling spirits invaded my mind
And sinister shadows materialized before me

I was lost among frail hallucinations
Where hazy smoke illuminated fallacy
Leaving a veil of untruths
That shattered my wall of carefully placed shields

I was held prisoner by irrational fears
The relentless murmurs in my head
As my body slipped away
And my soul tried to escape

I tried to forge some personal desires to escape
A body that needed solace
A soul that needed saving
And a heart that needed mending

But I could only fabricate whimsical pleasures
The crushing weight of a body without life
Its icy breath shivering along my flesh
As it pierced my body with bloody fangs

I was captivated with this Vampiric persona
The lavender eyes
The snow white flesh
And the immortality

Yet I mourned the eternal damnation
The loss of life
The thirst for blood
The fear of sunrise

But mostly the heart
That would never beat again

This ends with the heart that will never beat again, as my heart is beating faster from the anticipation of what would be further revealed through your creative articulation. I too use the same distractions you mindfully described... Never stop slashing your crimson puddles upon the page!

I am speechless. WOW! What powerful words. This is by far your best in my mind.

This is so descriptive of the dementia I watched my mother slip into...whether it is because of an illness or just madness...it's a scary place.

"I was held prisoner by irrational fears The relentless murmurs in my head" —— this is perfect. This is how people fail or win, live or die, by their thoughts. This piece is deliciously dark in an intelligent way. I am paralyzed by my loss of blood which you have successfully sucked from me again.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
