    Poem Commentary

My idea of a person discovering he is passing over from life to death.

    Discovery

The walk seemed to go slow
I did not see a friend or foe
    Only birds and dogs
And I swear they said hello

I don't remember leave my home
All I know is that I am alone
Looking around my view is obscurded
And dead ahead is a brillant white glow

I see people in the light
    Family members and the like
Joy and happiness is filling my soul
I now know this is where I belong

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
