    Poem Commentary

This poem written by my husband and I think it is very good. He never consider himself a poet but he defenitely is. So I would love to see your opinion on it

Down that Lonesome Road (written by James)

    Light and shadow flickering

on the sundown side of the porch

    A spinning windmill chopping

    late afternoon’s burning torch

Gangly legs propped on the railing

hat tipped low to block the glare

    I see him there

    in a leaning chair

    Through the dusty haze

    my old memories play

Never had a big grubstake, never had a lot to say

When he spoke it counted, didn’t matter if it paid

Risk his life to see a little child smile

Sink a spur and ride away

    A three reel picture show

    Ridin’ easy and slow

    As the twilight lifts

    How my memories drift

As I close my eyes my spirit sighs

For a well worn time that has passed me by

Now the credits roll and the twilight groans

For a man and his code

    Down that lonesome road

    Still I see him there

    In each new sunrise

    May he live in me

    And the children’s smiles

    Just the flickering light

    An old daguerreotype

And I will trail with him

    Down that lonesome road

not only is he definitely a poet, he's a very talented one. The meter shift in each stanza is perfect, the imagery is vivid and compelling and his phrasing is lovely. 10

Talent hidden brought to light. Though he may not acknowledge he's a poet, the lines, verses, and stanzas say much different. Thank you for sharing.

Life as an old movie. I think I rode in that picture in another lifetime. Tomorrow they want to build a new movie theater. It will be in you pocket and it will show everything that happened yesterday. Or even two months ago. A poet friend//RH Peat

"As I close my eyes my spirit sighs For a well worn time that has passed me by Now the credits roll and the twilight groans For a man and his code Down that lonesome road Still I see him there In each new sunrise May he live in me And the children’s smiles." This poem is a flawless tribute to someone the poet admires. Its strong nostalgic overtone is well emphasized by the word. "Memories" as a sort of leitmotiv. The images are familiar photographed as it were, and as they are, by an appropriate choice of diction that conveys the mood of the poem very well. The talent of the poet is exposed in this succinct poetic biography and tribute, The tittle, "Down That Lonesome Road " resounds throughout the entire poem reinforcing the the emotion.

Your husband has penned a classic write. He may not consider himself a poet but his talent says other wise. Excellent piece glad you shared.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
