Elvis

Graceland glowed in the bright moonlight,

On a warm and balmy summer night.

Only music was from the waving leaves,

On the magnificent and stately trees.

The wind spoke a pensive monologue,

About “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog”,

And “My Way”, Blue Christmas and “Jailhouse Rock”,

Or “Rock of Ages” and “How Great Thou Art”.

Rock and Roll hailed Elvis a king,

His career reaped much wealth and fame.

As long as his music and songs remain,

True fans will listen o’er and o’er again.

Elvis could burst forth out of control,

Singing with emotion in his soul,

But was never more passionate and strong,

Than when rendering a great gospel song.

                        Very flamboyant before a crowd,

Yet, times seemed under a dark cloud.

He never seemed to sense full release,

Than when singing about the Prince of Peace.

Graceland is peaceful now where he lies,

Beneath Tennessee’s heavenly skies,

Yet there is something somber in the air,

Recalling those days of that yesteryear.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
