    Poem Commentary

    Many times the boss asks me to drive in unfavorable weather conditions. It's part of the job. What is unseen, are the times we do some good out on the highway, because there is no wreckage as evidence. I think that is true in life too. We tend to see more of a person in our lives, when something is wrong. However, when life is good, and not a problem about, there seems to be less to see. It is an illusion.

    Evidence of Cause

    　

    Now:

         I see the truck

         In the ditch

         The inexperience

         The wreckage

    　

    Flashback!

         The snow is pounding

         With such fury

         The car in back

         Comes 'round in hurry!

         He sees the face

         A scared young boy!

         While his Mom and Dad play

         With a 5,000 pound toy

         THEY JAM ON THE BRAKES!

         And to save a life,

         The trucker avoids,

         Their unwanted strife...

         A HEROIC ACT!

         As the trucker swerves

         To miss the driver

         Who had the nerve

    　

    Now:

         It's a bright sunny day

         The birds fly free

         Not a snowflake around

         None you can see

         A truck in the ditch

         On it's side it will be

         "I can drive better than that,

         most definitely!"

    　

    Narrator:

         Life is just like the highway

         We see other lives in wreckage.

         Evidence of cause is gone.

         The event of heroism has escaped.

         All that is is seen,

         Is the big "mistake"

     

         And we think we can do better?

    I like the last comment, because it addresses those of us that judge others actions without knowing the whole story.

    Exactly. You have just said, what I felt when I wrote the poem. I used the trucking (driving) analogy only because most of us do drive, and can relate.

    I absolutely LOVE this powerful prose. Because of you, I have always been courteous to truck drivers, but some people may not have a clue as to the decisions you have to make when they cut you off. Be Safe!

    When others see the wreckage in your life (we all have some of that laying around), they do not know the pain you had to endure to survive it.
