Farewell

Farewell

Longtime we have been together,

Your going like this shreds my heart,

Our love has been a strong tether,

Not often have we been apart.

What will life be without you near?

Might I muse on life in the past?

Still memories could never spare

Me this loss and pall that it casts.

Close by you and holding your hand,

Feeling so deep the love we knew,

Seems more than my sad heart can stand,

That I must move on without you.

Please don’t leave me in nighttime.

The pain would be too hard to bear.

Can you hold on to the daytime?

It’s the goodbye that I fear.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
