FIRST BORN

Sometimes - in the evening
When my daily work is done - I wonder...
What's to become of you - my Son?

Sometimes - when it's quiet
When the day's routine is past - I wonder...
How can you be growing up so fast?

Does anyone care?
Does anyone really care?
Must you play with guns and armor?
Must you fight someone to win?
Must you live your father's life
All over again?

Is there somewhere in this great vast world
A place for you and me
With men who love - who trust - who give
That all men might live free?

You're such a little boy
And you're growing up so fast
How I love to watch your reaching
And to feel your little grasp
As I help you down the stairs
On your way to find your fun
And I'm left alone to wonder...
What's to become of you - my Son?

Simply beautiful! This piece is warm and touching. What a wonderful father you are. He must be an outstanding individual. A touching and warm piece! Thank you for the treat :))

Nicely done. The love between a father and son has changed so much over the years. I grew up thinking, men don't show genuine affection for one another. You just don't. The first time my father offered to hug me was when I was in my mid forties. Awkward! We've gotten better at it, though. With my kids, I don't want to wait that long. If I could suggest.. A Father's Love and The Journey 1&2. If you have time. TS

I truly share the sentiments in this poem and my mother before me. My mom was so anti-war she would not allow my two brothers to play with toy guns. But let me return to comment on your poem which does eloquently and gently ask the age old questions about whether there is a place for the common man who thirsts for a place where men can live in peace. Your haunting question hits me right in the solar plexis....

Yes I have. He will be 46 the 27th.

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.
