Garbage Man

A guy I once dated quoted Sonia Sanchez to me- you know that one poem “I gather up each sound you left behind and stretch them on our bed. Each night I breathe you and become high!” And when he said that I asked him

“Need a rebuttal”!

I gathered all the bullshit and bills yo ass left behind and threw it right in the trash, each night I breathe.

I take slow breathes and thank god I can know exhale, And repeated over and over this statement to myself “I am a woman, a strong black woman, what does not kill me makes me stronger with every breathe I take, I release the bullshit I have inhaled and endured. Why? Because if I kept all that baggage inside I will never heal and fall for a REAL man.

I will continue to attract men like you- scum’s of the fucking earth.

What I need is to find me; I need to be able to exude that wonderful attitude I had before I met you.
I need that sway of elegance I had before you trapped me.
I need that heavy Dolce and Cabaña purse I had before you broke me.
I need that jet black Jaguar to cruise in, but instead all I have is fucked up attitude, a sprain ankle from chasing yo low down ass, a pile of bills, and a raggedy ass car you promise to fix.

BUT WHAT I REALLY NEED to hurry because the garbage MAN is coming!!

Thank you

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
