Poem Commentary

I wanted to write something fun for Halloween. This is what came out. Hope you enjoy. Thanks.

Ghosts And Goblins

Was that a ghost or goblin I heard last night? I could be mistaken but believe I am right. I was walking through the tombstones in the cemetery. Cold hands reached out for my ankles where the dead lay buried. I ran as fast as I could, taking a shortcut through the woods.

Suddenly, One Hundred bats came flying at me from every direction. I ran searching for a place of protection. This gave me a terrible scare. I thought they were going to carry me off by my hair, somewhere.

There were sounds of screams that could be heard in the evening air. It was pitch black out with fog so thick you couldn't cut it with a knife. People were running for their life. Cats were hissing and vampires were kissing.

The whole world seemed to have gone mad on this night called Halloween. Not a single soul could you recognize and candy was the only pleasant surprise.

There were mummies stalking people on the street. They stood tall, about twelve feet. Be careful what you drink and eat. The tasty candies and brew were made up from pieces of a witches stew. It will make a slave of you. Run away now don't look back, nor hesitate. Soon, the flying monkeys will appear and it will be too late.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
