glass beach
shattered, broken shards
of lost purpose
useless rubble
tossed to the hungry waves
we languish
despaired of
like unwanted rubbish
forgotten days
when they were something other
something to be treasured
and handled with care
our sharp edges draw blood
so we are discarded
banished
denied fulfillment
neither contained
or able to contain
we are glass
scattered on a beach
in hopes the sea will swallow us
and then go still
as though we never mattered
at all
but the sea has other plans
we are tumbled against each other
sharp edges worn away
we are smoothed
reshaped
until only our color remains
and the artist comes seeking
as we reveal ourselves
in the sun's light
in brilliant flashes
of red
or green
amber and blue
we are scintillating
when our true color shines
and we are chosen
for the artist's work
together we transcend
our brokeness
of lost purpose
useless rubble
tossed to the hungry waves
we languish
despaired of
like unwanted rubbish
forgotten days
when they were something other
something to be treasured
and handled with care
our sharp edges draw blood
so we are discarded
banished
denied fulfillment
neither contained
or able to contain
we are glass
scattered on a beach
in hopes the sea will swallow us
and then go still
as though we never mattered
at all
but the sea has other plans
we are tumbled against each other
sharp edges worn away
we are smoothed
reshaped
until only our color remains
and the artist comes seeking
as we reveal ourselves
in the sun's light
in brilliant flashes
of red
or green
amber and blue
we are scintillating
when our true color shines
and we are chosen
for the artist's work
together we transcend
our brokeness
