Poem Commentary

While I admit it is kinda cheesy, it still makes me smile.  I wrote this my senior year of high school, reflecting on all of the things me and my friends had gotten into that year.  Me and my best friend were in stage crew for the first time ever that year.  Me and several of my other good friends enjoyed some "easy classes" senior year, which included a home ec type class where we actually made several pillows and various sewing projects.  There were the fall bond fires and the "high" of drinking and hanging out with friends, being a little more flirtatious than we ever were cause it was senior year and this would all be a blur soon!  I still keep in touch with my "best friend" from high school, across all the miles.  She lives in Arkansas and I in PA.  We send each other cards every holiday signed loved, your sis...and it still feels so much more than truth!

Good Friends

Good friends are the curtains
that make up our backdrops,
that secure around us
when the applause stop
Good friends are like prisms
reflecting back to us
all of the good we never see in ourselves

They hold the good times in a candy box
They keep the memories forever in their hearts

Good friends are the melodies
that make this poem, song
that live friendship each day
in holding us up strong
Good friends are like pillows
that I cry out my losses to
that hear my unspoken fears
and try to bring me through

Good friends are the fire
that make our anger melt
that sparks alive compassion
and shares all that we've felt
Good friends are like threads of a tapestry
weaved together with our hearts,
that hold together
when all else falls apart

Good friends are the rainbows
that show a pot of gold
lodged deep within
the heart of our souls
Please forgive me
if I'm at a loss of what to say,
Good friends are like the sisters
that will never fade away.

They hold the memories in a candy box
They keep the memories forever in their hearts
Best Friends!

Very good write. (I couldn't rub two subjective clauses together at 17.) It's got so much heart, so indicative of real friends.

Th best poetic lines utilize the verb "are" and not "are like," the former, are the mesmerizing fire of Bette Davis' eyes, the latter are like their seductive memory. Nevertheless, this is an accomplished work for a teen.

Interesting point. I'll have to remeber that for future poems. I think I still tend to use "are like" rather than are. But hey, I kinda like seductive memories!!

Just wanted to let you know that I took this advice in one of my newer poems, Lost Lover. I had wanted to make each one say "are like" rather than are, but I took the leap and stuck with just "are" and I think it turned out well!

I also tried to use it on Perpetual Healing but I think it made it kinda confusing.

Very sweet and sincere, heart felt and honest, to the point.

Where everybody knows your name...! Sorry, pic and poem reminded me of the series Cheers! You can't beat good friends, except maybe at golf, lol! Btw, instead of a candy box, I might've said jewelry box - to imply more permanence. Good write on a spiritual truth! 10!

I had to laugh at the reference to "Cheers," good show though!! You get my thought that "well, it's a little cheesy" but good and true and sweet all the same! Thanks for the idea of maybe a jewelry box instead of a candy box, that does seem to be a better fit, maybe. I think I'll make that change! Thanks so much! A 10, really? Me, wow!!! That means A LOT!!!!!

Poetry is what gets lost in translation.
