Great Surprise
I never chose to fall out of love with you
it came with great surprise
it happened as I'd reach out for your hand
and feel it not reach back for mine
I sensed your great pain and tried my best to love it all away
I'd grab your arm, smile, curl up next to you
but somehow you'd stopped smiling back and I couldn't even tell
It came with great surprise to hear
you didn't want me to share my thoughts, my day, my memories
didn't want to laugh and eat at my table--unless it was at my expense
didn't want to sleep in my bed, retreat to the web instead
I sensed it, but I'd shake the thought, trying harder to get through to you
how much I loved you....
but you only walked away; I prayed
It came with great surprise to see you look for comfort elsewhere
cheated on first with the bottle; then found others who could share your hate of me
I felt you slipping, but you were already gone
I fought as hard as I could to just hold on
but one person can not carry love alone, it's meant for two.
it came with great surprise
it happened as I'd reach out for your hand
and feel it not reach back for mine
