Greater Expectations

Greater Expectations

Contemplating, poor and pale, picking up his pen'll
Make them wait in for the mail from his kennel-
Working his way up through smells of first, disgust,
Second, discontent,
And finally, roses
And finish by filing things through the rings of a string of posies,
He supposes
But supposing leads to greater expectations.

You have deciphered the harvest of a quiet eye. There is a lot that is beautiful out there, but we overlook most of it, we tend to focus on something else: an ongoing stream of consciousness, an internal monologue about events, actions and feelings from the past, or worries, hopes and plans regarding the future and writing help us to to reap "the harvest of a quiet eye". A writer will always struggle for he first, must observe, then execute, BUT a writer never fails, for he has already conquered the vision. To be the subject for laughter would only be a recognition that you possess no fear of speaking your mind. I have climbed high and I crawled low ;) Keep on observing for we are few and keep on executing like you already have. Poetically rich- The flow was liquid -like. Well done.

Absolutely inspiring. Your speech was like a poem itself. Thank you so much for taking the time to post that, almost thank you for caring if you will. As you advise, I have conquored my own little fear, as I am still writing, but your pep talk was inspiring and very much appreciaited nevertheless. Thank you.

This one's very interesting for me... it's very enigmatic, but what I get out of it is that you were experiencing a bit of writer's block, and now that you've picked up your pen again... while you're personally satisfied, you're a little worried of the expectations that will be placed on you as a result. I'm probably way off... but I have to be given credit for taking a stab at it, right? haha!

Very very close. Not post-writer's block writing as such, but more writing in general, though, as you have proven, the beauty of poetry and art as a whole, is that it is more about the reader/viewer's perception rather than the writer/artist's intention. It was written when I feared that I would fall prey to never stick at writing, given it may be easier to never try at all, than to try and fail, as, like you say, satisfying expectations often, if not always, leads to further expecations. The lines about the smells refer to workign my way up through literary recognition, from being laughed out to lauded. Yet does 'I've made it' ever happen? Is it ever realised? Or is it simply a case of, the higher up you go, the further you have to fall. I'm an optimist as a rule, but this was a particularly pessimistic day! But yes, credit where credit's due... Thank you MN!!

I suppose all the time....... This is a good creation of writing for we are suppose to await for greater things standing in faith of more when we make better choices in our lives...... red

Very true, glad you liked it. I intended the poem to be short and almost confusing, like a passing thought, as if, as you say, we were 'supposing'. Thank you for commenting Red.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
