Guilt

Guilt

Troubles have lasted
throughout my life,
and sometimes I
can't sleep at night.

Though maybe that's
the source for me...
to feel the bad
in order to see!

I still but wonder
what might have been,
if I had listened
to Mother then?

Though...what "is", is now
and I can't show
these feelings that
I ought to know.

I'm lost inside
a world of fears...
but when I look
they disappear!

When eyes are closed,
they stir about...
what is this world
my mind seeks out?

Why does this world
torment me so?
The guilt that refuses
to let me go!

I feel as thought you've turned yourself inside out and exposed yourself for us to see here. Thanks for your honesty, Litilraven. I appreciate that.

thanks. I don't think I exposed anything more than what others may also feel at some point in their life. We all have things we wish could have been done differently, and we all have guilt over many things in our past... The original title was "nightmares", but the poem was indeed about guilt, so I changed it.

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
