    Haiku Poems

Just recently began to understand and appreciate the Japanese Haiku Poetry.  Here are some of my feeble attempts.

My understanding of the guidelines for Haiku poetry are:

    Style - Haiku
    ---- 3 lines of 5 syllables / 7 syllables / 5 syllables
    ---- Be objective, not subjective
---- Pictures from nature or the natural world are good
    ---- line 1: picture / line 2: action / line 3: result of action + picture
---- Try not to use is, are, was, were ('to be' words)

    Sadness
    by Bob Shannon

    cold winter winds blow
falling, dead, dry  leaves pass by
    old man sits and sighs

    Hope
    by Bob Shannon

    Dark, loud, angry clouds
Bright rays shining through soft tears
    Flowers smile again.

    Happiness
    by Bob Shannon

    new leaves smile at sun
    mothers and children stroll by
    young man laughs out loud

It is a skill to write in Haiku. For it is usually of nature and entails a complete thought or tells a story. This you have achieved quite well. Congrats on your writes, Olan

I liked how you explained what Haiku means to you, then delivered your meaning with some very well written poems.

Great kaiku poems. The first one reminded me of my dad, who like you, lost my mom after 50 years.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
