    Hearth
    Hearth

    Familiar, soothing and sound
    Stone, anchored to the ground

    Pillars, marble, statues lure
    Gateways, altars, steadfast, sure

    Common, custom, driven down
    Solemn, sober, subtle mound

    Timeless, ageless, eternal dwell
    Daunting lock and freeing cell

    Open chamber dive in dust
    Raging anger, living lust

    To mind came the first house we owned that had a fire place in it. Some wine, Andrea Boccelli on the stereo, and a fire. Great poem. Thanks for the memory.

    Very intriguing write: a hearth without fire, heat, smoke or light. I am confident, I would have surely failed to entertain this write without these essentials, that outwardly signify a hearth. Excellent write!

    Many years ago I rented a small, old cottage in the mountains that I might rest and recharge after obtaining my graduate degree. The cottage is high in the Piedmonts and much to my surprise the first night I was there snow fell about a half meter deep. I found wood had been cut and so I built a fire not in the stove (it was oil burning) but in the very old, solid and quiet fire place. I spent the evening eating from the pot where flames caressed it's blackness and later feeling full, I lay looking into the fire and taking in the whole of the fire and the vessel that contained it. I did not put words to it but after reading this work I do not have to as you have helped me to know now what my eyes knew so long ago. For any who have shared a fire with someone or even alone, this poem will certainly help one to know there is more to hearth and stone.

    Thanks Paolo, for getting over to this older one of mine. I really loved it as I wrote it and it means something different to everyone that reads it, most assuredly. I am thankful for your perspective and I am glad we had a similar glimpse of the Hearth. I grew up in S. Ga and we had many hearths in all of my childhood homes, as well as fire spits for roasting pheasant and other game. Hearths and Fires were abundant all throughout my childhood, so that is probably why it is so prevalent for me. ty
