Heavenly Tears

My paradise lies in ruin.

Oh my children, what have you done?

Of all the lives I created,

You’ve proven to be the worst.

Why must you be always so selfish?

Why so ungrateful and vain?

My paradise lies in ruin.

Oh children, can’t you feel my pain?

How can you harm such beautiful creatures?

When all you need I’ve provided by tons.

How can you kill such priceless treasures?

What will be left when you’re gone?

My paradise lies in ruin;

Most birds today sing no more.

My awe-inspiring forests lie naked,

Because all its beauty you’ve torn.

The spills of your wars leaks to the rivers.

Your greed devours all it finds;

All that is precious you sever,

 And then you sever its vines.

Why are you so heartless and cruel?

Did I not give you all hearts?

What will you do when the Earth caves in?

Have you all really lost your minds?

Why can’t you live with each other?

Why must you always wage war?

Why can’t you just love your brother?

Just try, please, it’s not that hard.

I grow tired of your chaos.

Your pleas slowly stop to move my heart.

Please look, learn and grow wiser;

I do not wish to erase you from amongst the stars.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
