Her Escape

Poem Commentary

Inspired by the beautiful, peace-filling frosted window pane I see as I fall asleep. I look forward to bedtime just to be still and gaze at the sparkling window...

Her Escape

Escape

she gazes through starlight
face to the frosted pane
where a diamond studded landscape
fuses weary soul and brain

through glint and hue of tanzanite
her dreams begin to write

how shadowed tree limbs fall
to rise, upon the icy view
in sanctuary's quiet hall
marked with peace signs ~overdue

her need for stillness genuine
now scatters ash on venial sin

reposing, draped in holy light
no gloom of darkening cave
a poem of peace now flares
the flames upon her heart engrave

the fires of comfort thus ignite
embraced by the stars tonight

A hint of Thanatopsis in this. The desire for peaceful dreamsleep competes with the dreamless sleep of death. For now, life wins out, but the eternal stars beckon. A great antiphonal theme between fire and frost. Human life is somewhere safely in between.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
