    Hero of Old

There Once was a hero of Old
    Story's of her never told.
She went from here to there
And what a hardship it all was to bear.
    Keeping the innocent safe
No one ever knowing her face.
In China she fought great Dragons.
In India, poison flowing in flagons.
    Many battles she fought
Her own happiness never she sought.
    Alas it could not last
She was fading away quite so fast.
Her hair gone silver and pale,
Her body growing weak and frail.
For her years they where many
But to her it felt like quite few.
Where her life had gone she knew not,
Not far off her life would soon end in a box.
But one morrow as the sun arose
Her silver knight did smite her foes.
The life's long mission she had up took
Was soon lost only to my book.
With her knight she rode away
Never to be seen for many a long day.
With the setting sun they returned,
To tell the tale of how Rome had burned.
Above in the sky a dove did sore,
And upon that dove I swore
Never to forget that I just re-told,
That I once learned from the great and bold.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
