Holding On

Holding On

I'm trying to hold on something
That's already gone.
In fact it's been gone
For a while now.
I've just straight-up denied it
Hoping there was still something left
For me to cling to. (Traces?)
You know what happens to hands
When they clutch too tightly?
They become stiff and sore.
They forget what it's like to let go.
So even when they (have to)
Let go,
It feels like it's still there.
The memory of the object as real
As its physical presence.
You must reteach the muscles
To bend the other way
And stretch farther.
Just do it slowly,
They need some time to remember
(And dwell).
