Poem Commentary

in a scholarship writing class i was asked to create a metaphor for myself. this is how I would like to see myself.

I am a tree

I am a tree
rooted in the Earth
branches reaching for the sky
I bear fruit of nutritious knowledge
I reflect the seasons of life
My strong limbs provide shade for the weary
and I am a child's fortress.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
