I Know Why Great Minds Kill Themselves

I Know Why Great Minds Kill Themselves

hey say ignorance is bliss
They forget to mention intelligence is turmoil.
Not a month goes past without my superior memory remind me of the worst parts of my life.
Not a week goes by that I do not ache for the state of the world.
Not a day passes that I am not analyzing every move and countermove.
Not an hour gets lived in the moment. . .
I understand why Hemmingway drank,
Why Turing sided with cyanide,
How Van Gogh slept a bullet off
And how Cobain took a bullet to the brain.
Why Hendrix ate yellow jack'ts
How Thomas Paine drank away the pains
She was so smart.
He had such a gift.
Why would anyone,
.
with such potential,
.
 do something like this?
They say only the good die young
. . .
Only the great never really live at all.
They say ignorance is bliss
They forget to mention intelligence is turmoil.

Not a month goes past
without my superior memory,
reminding me of the worst parts of my life.

Not a week goes by
that I do not ache for the state of the world.

Not a day passes
that I am not analyzing every move and countermove.

Not an hour gets lived in the moment. . .

I understand why Hemmingway drank,
Why Turing sided with cyanide,
How Van Gogh slept a bullet off
And how Cobain took a bullet to the brain.
Why Hendrix ate yellow jack'ts
How Thomas Paine drank the pains away.

She was so smart.
He had such a gift.
Why would anyone - -
with such potential - -
do something like this?

They say only the good die young

Only the great never really live at all.

jj, I can so relate to that. My mind drives me crazy. It's like Charly in Flowers for Algernon. Great write. Matthew.

I love how you describe the intellect of these people as well as the struggles they face. I love how instead of the objectification of them, you actually humanize them. Great Write.

Thank you so much for the very kind review

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
