I Thought I Knew You

I Thought I Knew You

I Thought I Knew You

You held me in your arms, a new Dad were you
My little mind knew no hurt, had never been "blue"
But those hands of yours soon took a toll
Brought misery and fear
I shook at just the thought that Daddy was drawing near
       I thought I knew you....but I was wrong

You watched me walk down the aisle to give myself to you
I thought no love could be so strong as what I felt so true
Soon real life came and angry words became our very norm
I bore your children, loved them so, but always 'midst the storm
      I thought I knew you....but I was wrong

I needed a new life, a new start, a new hand to hold in mine
You seemed to fit the bill so well, our life would be so fine
We started as a whirlwind but something in me died
You weren't the man I thought you were, but oh how I tried
      I thought I knew you...but I was wrong

The men in life can come and go, some bring joy, but few
They use us and abuse us so, they think they own us, too
From fathers to husbands and back again, My life is a sad song
I thought that I knew you all...but I was oh so wrong!

What a sad but well written poem. I could feel all of the pain, shame and hate as I read these captivating words. A. W. Nutter www.freewebs.com

I am sorry you have experienced so much pain. So often when betrayeal begins as a child it follows us along the path of life. The good news is that there are so many paths leading down beautiful, serene roads to different choices and insights. I wish for you insight to know you.......and to know you so well that you only invite others into your life that appreciate and validate you.......Where there has been great pain there is tremendous opportunity for great joy. Thank you for sharing.

Thx for your comment. Some of my poem is first-hand knowledge, but some of it I took literary license with from talking to others. I appreciate your taking the time to comment!

well done so painful you really got the message across a very common tragedy in our society.don't write off all us men we're not all like that

Thx Monkyntx! It is an all-to-common theme, it seems, but don't worry. some of it is autobiographical, but my children have a good father, who is a good man, so I certainly haven't written HIM off. And I'm giving YOU the benefit of the doubt. :) :) Thx for taking the time to read and comment...your comments mean a lot to me! Still friends? :) ~~Sandy

Dang!... the disappointment of it all. I'd say I feel your pain, but being a guy, you can write me off with the rest.

More like disillusionment. :) But I'm all about second (3rd, 4th & more) chances in life, too. You made me smile at the "write me off" comment. Thanks for the reality check! I AM a writer, but I refuse to write you off! :)

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
