Last Fix

She couldn't remember her way back home
Her life on the streets, so all alone
Despair and defeat - a friend of a friend
The suffering she'd known seemed never to end

Just seventeen, this woman-girl
A childhood interrupted had shattered her world
She pondered if true that anyone had
A life such as hers, so hopeless and sad

A high once so cool now ruled every thought
She traded her body for drugs that were bought
The men in her life all seemed just the same
They all ran together, one person, one name

Her arms now track-lined, a pound in her head
In her painful world she would rather be dead
The needle lay still, her body as well
She'd had her last fix in this world she called hell

This is touching, a very good write with true emotion, very impactful, (one time I had to drop off a girl at a rehab, never seen her since, maybe I saved her life, I hope so...)

Thank you for the kind comment. We never know what one random act of kindness will do in another person's life. I hope she got her life together and is doing well. You did your part...that's all you CAN do, sometimes.

I already commented on "Run Away," which I just read. Thx for the recommendation. Intense and real. Good stuff.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
