    Letters in thy name

In letters those i seem to see,
those not in thy name to be,
    a sighing of their faith.

Yes, i swear, they sob a bit,
for they not in that title sit,
    which calls thy Goddess state.

    Within them is some jealousy,
for them that name thy liberty,
    and high thine blessings date.

That other letters were found fit,
to colour thee by going with,
    thy travels true and great.

It seems their crying all to me:
"Such ill for-tuned souls are we,
not in her name to bathe!"

And they swore they'll keep on hit,
as would their mission realize it,
    to have thy naming made.

    Ti's by thy generosity,
thou gives them too thy ecstasy,
that depth of deep thy credit!
    To end their sorrowed poverty,
by in thy name to edit:
    "All six and twenty letters!"

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
