Poem Commentary

this is the first in a series of vampire poems i started back in the '90's. i have always been interested in them, moreso now after a brief stint with a friend who is a modern vampire. i will be adding more as time goes on, hope everyone likes this.

Life-Death - Kiss of Immortality

Centuries have flown and young I remain.
Trapped forever, full of blood-lust and pain.
Taking my victims in the deep, dark night.
Sealing their fates in on short, painless bite.

Dead, yet alive, but no soul left to claim.
Damned by an evil with a long-forgotten name.
Love known in echoes from a non-beating heart.
Death took her ages ago, though we shared the same mark.

But guilt ruled her conscience, her mind was bereaved.
She let sunlight fall upon her and she withered like leaves.
Her ashes I keep in a golden urn,
and my love lies among them as time's pages turn.

Oft I scream, "God, please let me die!",
but He has forsaken me and I'm left here to cry.
My disregard for mortals brings me hatred in scope,
yet they are my savior; my food, life, and hope.

Brides serve no purpose, just a name and an act.
Love has no interest when death seals the pact.
The wind and the wolves make such a joyful noise,
but when the night calls, I have no choice.

I satiate my hunger; warm flesh ripped aside.
When my feast is over, across the moon I will glide.
Centuries pass, life-death carries on.
Madness incandescent; as bright as the sun.

Cross over boundaries in the dark of the night.
Demonic virtues; a pagan's delight.
Whisper insanity inside mortal minds.
Take out their numbers; add to my kind.

Legions of vampyr stalking the earth,
all damned to Hell from the time of our birth.
Knowing the path that we've chosen is wrong,
but still singing eternal life's macabre song.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
