    lighthouse

standing alone in a tower of glass
shining the light out to sea
    trying to save from destruction
    everyone but me

    once safely past the peril
    ships will blow their horn
to thank the light for guidance
    before they carry on

    I don't know where they're going
    I don't know where they've been
the only thing I've ever known
is that they can't come in

    the life behind that mirror
    can only know the dark
    and from that solitary post
    never can embark

I've never felt the lashing waves
or stood to face the storm
    behind these plate glass windows
    I've a duty to perform

    to witness and to wonder
    what it must be like
to bravely fight the raging sea
    and finally see the light

I've tried to keep things going
to ensure the light can shine
but it's lonely in this lighthouse
    so now I must resign

tender, I love the underlying frustrations and desires in this poem that reminds one of the keeper of the lighthouse and the dedication to their task. ginga

Hm...I don't know. I don't think it's great or good or horrible. It's just the way it is. You put yourself as the lighthouse? Ishy for me. Do you mind checking out my poems? I'm new and want to know other people's opinions...

Wow!! You have so splendidly captured the loneliness and wistfulness of a lighthouse! The palpable desire for thankfulness in a thankless world. Who considers the light - until it is not there? This poem is so metaphorically rich it blows my mind! Great poem! Thanks for sharing. 10 from me.

Beacons of light can shine within just like the lighthouse shines within to help other ships avoid danger....But somtimes we dont see the light and avoid the storms of life

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
